Richard Newman

I became interested in clocks & watches at an early age following in the footsteps of my father and friend, Walter. Among my favorite family stories is one that my parents tell about attending a New England auction in the early 1950’s, when they were still newlyweds. They purchased their first clock at that auction for $6.00; however, the price would have been less if they had been within sight of each other when the bidding started because they were well into the twenty-five cent raises before realizing that they were actually bidding against each other. Six bucks was a lot of money back then, but at least they both liked the clock and have it to this day.

I serve on the board of directors for the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and head the British Horology Chapter. I am particularly interested in colonial and early American watchmakers and that prompted the publication of this website. I have also published numerous articles on both British and American horology, and am keenly interested in American watch papers. This article is about an interesting early George Washington watch paper (other articles written, including those referenced on this site, are listed here).
